Mobile Experts has released updated base station and transceiver forecasts, which indicate a major disruption in the market for China Mobile TD-LTE production. RF semiconductor suppliers are ramping up production which corresponds with delivery of 207,000 TD-LTE base stations. However, despite widespread media reports that 200,000 base stations will be deployed during 2013, industry semiconductor suppliers indicate that production and deployment limitations will stretch deliveries over a period of roughly 18 months.

NEC Corp. has developed a new technology that estimates the transmission speed of internet and mobile network communications (3G and LTE), enabling the provision of high quality services based on transmission speeds.

Thailand's bustling population of 67 million has reportedly reached a mobile penetration rate of more than 130 percent, according to recent government figures. In early 2013, Ericsson ConsumerLab studies have also shown that smartphone penetration in urban Thailand grew more than two-fold from 17 percent in 2012 to 36 percent in 2013. 

The NGMN Alliance officially welcomes BT, SingTel, Tele2, Turkcell, VimpelCom, Broadcom and University of Toronto, which have all recently joined NGMN. With these new partners, the NGMN Alliance membership base now comprises 22 global mobile network operators, 33 major telecom vendors and 12 international research institutions.

Comtech Telecommunications Corp.announced that its Santa Clara, CA-based subsidiary, Comtech Xicom Technology Inc., has received an additional $1.4 million in orders to supply solid-state high-power amplifiers to a military integrator. The orders included X-band, C-Band and Ku-band SSPA products for use in highly mobile satellite communications (SATCOM) systems providing voice, data, video conferencing, internet and high resolution video connectivity for military forces deployed world-wide.

There are many companies that contribute to 3GPP technologies, including WCDMA/HSPA, LTE, and the EPC; however, only a handful of companies stand out across the board. ABI Research looked at the number of chairmanships, rapporteurships, overall contributions, approved contributions, and discussion papers for 3GPP standards. This was done for RAN1, RAN2, RAN3, RAN4, RAN5, SA1, SA2, SA3, SA4, SA5, CT1, CT3, and CT4 from 2009 through 2012.

Ltd., a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, have agreed a multi-year IP License and a Solution Supply Agreement which establishes NXP Software as a primary Samsung voice solutions partner.

For the second calendar quarter in a row, smartphone shipments represented more than half (52%) of the world’s mobile phone shipments.  Led by electronics manufacturer Samsung, an estimated 408 million handsets and 214 million smartphones shipped during the second quarter of 2013, according to market intelligence firm ABI Research.

Aeroflex announced that its TM500 Test Mobile has added support for the 3GPP WCDMA Release 10 standard, the latest evolution of the HSPA+ standards, which adds support for MC-HSDPA (Multi Carrier High-Speed Download Packet Access). 

Laser Direct Structuring (LDS), a process patented by LPKF, is increasingly used in the manufacturing of complex antennas for mobile phones or tablet PCs. As the popularity of this technology increases, so has the number of infringements on this patent, which grants the laser technology specialist LPKF exclusive rights to the LDS process.
