NXP Semiconductors and Movandi have formed a joint partnership to collaborate on millimeter wave (mmWave) solutions for 5G networks. The partnership combines Movandi’s RF transceiver and systems architecture with NXP’s digital networking and signal processing portfolio to develop 5G solutions for wireless infrastructure.

Movandi, a privately held start-up with a self-described mission to “revolutionize 5G everywhere,” will contribute its RF design, beamforming and receiver sensitivity capabilities. Movandi’s technology provides high performance with modularity, so mmWave 5G services can be flexibly implemented across numerous use cases and deployment scenarios.

NXP will contribute products from its Layerscape family of Arm®-based communications processing platforms and programmable baseband processing. Layerscape SoCs possess a common hardware and software architecture scalable in performance, power and cost. Programmable acceleration and offloaded security provide hardware differentiation, and solution-level packages for applications such as wireless, cloud, security provide software differentiation.

Making 5G Real

To realize the data rate and latency potential promised by 5G, service providers must deliver consistent coverage, overcoming the challenges from line of site, blocking, high path loss and self-installation — even in the most remote, hard-to-reach indoor areas. To meet these challenges, Movandi and NXP aim to provide solutions that will help wireless operators optimize data rates and provide users with a superior connected experience, while overcoming the propagation barriers that can deteriorate 5G signals.
