Work on new technologies that will form the foundation of 5G standards has been occurring for the last few years; however, the formal standards process has just begun, according to ABI Research.

Ericsson and IBM  announced a collaboration to jointly research phased-array antenna designs for 5G, allowing networks to provide customers with data speeds orders of magnitude faster than what is available currently.

Huawei has announced details of its involvement in the University of Surrey's 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) based in Guildford, England. The 5GIC will be the world's leading independent facility for researching and trialling 5G technologies. As part of the 5GIC's work, Huawei and other technology partners are working in collaboration, to develop the world's first 5G test bed, based at the University's campus, where emerging 5G technologies will be tested in a real-world environment.  

Keysight Technologies, Inc. announced sponsorship of the B4G MIMO Lab, part of National Taiwan University’s (NTU) High-Speed Radio Frequency and mmWave Center. Keysight also announced that is has joined the B4G/5G Technology Forum. The lab is one of the projects at the center aiming to develop key components used in Beyond 4G and 5G mobile communication systems. 

At the 5G Global Summit, held in Busan, South Korea, Rohde & Schwarz presented an extremely compact test setup for generating and analyzing signals up to 67 GHz that will enables users to evaluate potential new physical air interface technologies for future 5G networks.

Keysight Technologies, Inc. introduced the Keysight EEsof EDA 5G Baseband Exploration Library. Providing ready-to-use reference signal processing intellectual property (IP) for 5G technology research, this industry-first library dramatically increases productivity for system architects and baseband physical layer designers. 

Huawei and Etisalat jointly showcased the future concept of 5G mobile broadband services during the GITEX Technology Week in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which was the first time 5G technology had been presented in the region.

CEA-Leti announced that a consortium of 15 leading telecommunications operators, vendors, research centers and academic institutions have launched “MiWaveS” (Millimeter-Wave Small Cell Access and Backhauling), a European collaborative project whose goal is to develop millimeter-wave (mmW) key radio technologies to provide multi-Gbps data rates to future 5G cellular mobile networks users.
