Qorvo®, a leading provider of core technologies and RF solutions for mobile, infrastructure and defense applications, announced the availability of a ZigBee 3.0 software development kit (SDK) for Smart Home gateways that incorporate the new GP712 radio communication controller chip from GreenPeak Technologies (now the Low Power Wireless business unit of Qorvo).

The installed base for 802.15.4-enabled devices is forecast to increase almost fivefold over the next 5 years, rising from just under 425 million to over 2.1 billion in 2019, findsABI Research.

ZigBee enabled device shipments will grow to almost 400 million units per annum in 2018 driven by adoption of the technology by service providers to enable sales of smart home services.

By 2018, ABI Research expects annual home automation device shipments to exceed 351 million, growing at a CAGR of 78 percent. ZigBee dominated IEEE 802.15.4 and claimed the top share of node shipments at 4.5 million, narrowly beating out proprietary protocol offerings.

According to a new report by ABI Research, annual shipments of 802.15.4-enabled devices are forecast to grow more than 5X from 2012 to 2018, with a CAGR of over 30%. ZigBee continues to be the primary driver toward standardization and interoperability and will see further strong growth across many markets, accounting for almost 80% of total 802.15.4-enabled device shipments in 2018.

The total market for open short-range wireless (SRW) technology based ICs, i.e., Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, ZigBee, NFC, and GPS, is expected to reach almost 5 billion units in 2013 and grow to nearly 8 billion by 2018. Anaren Inc. announced that its Anaren Integrated Radio (AIR) module team is partnering with Austin, Texas-based middleware developer Emmoco to create the AIR Support for BLE solution. As a guest supplier at the Premier-Farnell booth (#220, Hall 5) in the Embedded World 2013 exhibition, the AIR team will be explaining its technology concept for fast-emerging Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) applications -- and will also be actively developing a pool for "beta-testers" for the upcoming AIR Support for BLE solution, which is scheduled for release in the spring/summer of 2013.
