Using Calibration to Optimize Performance in Crucial Measurements
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore is set to expand its R&D efforts by establishing a new research laboratory with Thales Technology Centre Singapore and Thales Research & Technology (France). Known as Thales@NTU, the laboratory will harness science and technology to develop dual-use technologies that are applicable to both defence and commercial applications.
Thales@NTU will tap into research talents from Singapore and Europe to conduct research work relevant to the ever growing demands of the defence industry for speed and accuracy. The laboratory will be headed by associate professor Tjin Swee Chuan of NTU’s School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Dr. Jean Chazelas from Thales Research & Technology. The laboratory will initially focus on three areas of research: ultra-wideband (UWB) communication — the laboratory will explore the use of UWB in imaging systems, sensor networks and precision location positioning systems; III-V semiconductor materials and devices; and photonics.
Commenting on the laboratory, Dr. Su Guaning, president of NTU, proffered, “As a research-intensive university, we fully understand the need to provide opportunities for our academics to do R&D work. Thales@NTU will enable us to integrate and develop long-term research plans. I am confident that the laboratory will develop exciting, cutting-edge technologies that may be exploited for both commercial and military applications.”
