With the increasing popularity and use of single-mode Bluetooth® low energy in automotive, home office, medical and health, sports and fitness, and mobile and PC accessories, Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) released its newest BLE-Stack™ 1.3 software to support continued development and enhancement of Bluetooth low energy. TI’s BLE-Stack 1.3 includes over-the-air firmware downloads (OAD), which enable updates to CC2540/1 firmware to be downloaded from a central device, such as a phone, tablet or PC onto the CC2540/1 system-on-chip (SoC) directly over the RF link.

Vishay Precision Group Inc. announced that the company has opened a new Vishay Foil Resistors (VFR) Precision Center within Digi-Key Corp., a global full-service provider of both prototype/design and production-quality electronic components. Digi-Key can now build and ship VFR surface-mount precision resistors — with no minimum quantities — in 24 to 48 hours, including VFR's popular new Bulk Metal® Foil VSMP (Z-Foil Technology) and VSM series resistors.

Crystek’s new CVCO55CXT-6525-6525 coaxial resonator oscillator (CRO) is a coaxial-based VCO with an internal proprietary frequency doubler. The CVCO55CXT family’s frequency doubling, 2X fundamental technology reaches new performance levels of lower phase noise and much lower harmonics over the competition, while achieving lower current consumption in the process.

Public venue small cells are an emerging class of small cell equipment, which are expected to grow at a CAGR of 67 percent to $3.1 billion in 2018. The public venue small cell category is a subset of the existing enterprise small cell segment, and will represent 50 percent of the segment by 2018.

Custom MMIC added three new GaAs MMIC power amplifiers covering 5 to 11 GHz to their growing standard product library. The CMD169P4 (5 to 7 GHz), CMD170P4 (7.5 to 9 GHz) and CMD171P4 (9.5 to 11 GHz) each have an output 1 dB compression point of greater than +28 dBm, with gain levels from 20 to 30 dB.

In 2012 a major milestone has been reached for the Wi-Fi market: over 5 billion Wi-Fi enabled devices have been shipped in the technologies lifetime. Recent explosive growth has been largely driven by the smartphone and laptop markets but future success will be dependent on Wi-Fi penetration into newer markets such as connected home and automotive devices.

The New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute (OTI) has completed the first phase of construction on a next generation wireless network located in the Cass Corridor section of Detroit, Mich. OTI will use the Detroit network to test Commotion — a new, open-source wireless technology — ahead of its public release in early 2013.
