The International Microwave Symposium (IMS) will be held June 5-10 at the Baltimore Convention Center. IMS2011 is the largest and most prestigious IEEE microwave conference in the world, bringing together international experts to showcase the most advanced research, development and innovation in RF, microwave, millimeter-wave and terahertz technologies. IMS2011 sessions will cover developments in microwave technology from nano devices to system applications – all focusing on the IMS 2011 theme, “Microwaves for the World.”
“IMS2011 includes a variety of technical sessions, panel sessions, workshops, and short courses on state-of-the-art technologies and techniques presented by leading experts from around the world,” stated Jeff Pond, General Chair, IMS 2011. “With an emphasis on global technology, the programming was selected to appeal to novices, undergraduate/graduate students and practitioners as well as researchers in the microwave and millimeter-wave fields.”
In an effort to let contributors determine the topics presented at the symposium and to expand the scope of the sessions, the IMS2011 Steering Committee solicited papers focusing on emerging technical areas. As a result, several technical areas have been added this year – RF nanotechnologies, efficient wireless transfer of power, technologies and systems, and industrial applications of high-power microwaves.
“The Technical Program Committee has worked extremely hard to plan these sessions that we feel reflect the state of microwave technology and the microwave industry today,” stated Ramesh K. Gupta, Technical Program Chair, IMS 2011. “We see an increased emphasis on achieving better power efficiency and linearity using novel devices and circuit techniques; better spectral efficiency with advanced and flexible modulation schemes; as well as new techniques for more efficient DC power use.”
The IMS 2011 schedule is packed with technical paper sessions, interactive forums, plenary and panel sessions, workshops, short courses, industrial exhibits, application seminars, historical exhibits, and a wide array of other technical activities. Highlights include the plenary presentation on Monday, June 6 given by Professor J. David Rhodes, entitled "Migration of WCDMA and 4G LTE into Existing Cellular Bands.” On Tuesday, June 7, the special session “Historical Perspective on Microwave Development in Baltimore-Washington Area,” tells the story of 100 years of superconductivity and microwave development in the Baltimore and Washington, DC area presented by speakers with first-hand knowledge of the local history. Other sessions will address microwave technologies for space applications, GaN and LDMOS linear power amplifiers, RF MEMS, and ultra-low power transceiver architectures.

Advance registration for IMS 2011 is available until June 3 and on-site registration is open through June 9.
