The Lumexis Fiber To The Screen (FTTS™) system is airborne with the assistance of Tyco Electronics. This new system brings weight savings and unprecedented capability to the commercial airline industry as demonstrated during the maiden flight of the US Airways A320 launched February 3, 2009.

The products supplied by Tyco Electronics aided a problem-free installation for the first US Airways A320 aircraft in Rome, NY. As an example of its commitment to customer satisfaction, Tyco Electronics closely assisted in the installation process, contributing to the successful delivery.

Rich Salter, chief technical officer of Lumexis, commented that, “Tyco Electronics has been an engaged and supportive collaborator with Lumexis since the project’s inception. Our challenge to deliver a robust, easy-to-maintain fiber optic IFE solution which would survive many years of rigorous daily airline service was made much easier by employing Tyco Electronics’ extensive experience and their proven fiber optic components.”

“The opportunity to work with the Lumexis team has been a privilege,” according to Earle Olson, business development manager for Rugged Fast Protocol solutions with Tyco Electronics. “The fact that the installation went so smoothly and everything worked so well during final system check is very exciting and something that the teams should be very proud of.”

The fiber optic backbone and interconnect scheme was developed by Lumexis and Tyco Electronics, along with In Flight Canada, to provide the most efficient installation, thereby minimizing the time spent out of revenue service. The FTTS system combines industry standard ARINC 801 fiber optic interfaces with a very flexible fiber routing approach that maintains room for growth, assuring affordability for the long term regarding installed and applied costs.
