Retrospective — December 1962

The demands imposed by systems requirements have made it necessary to provide components which are not only extremely reliable but which are completely described in respect to their electrical, mechanical and environmental characteristics.

Many engineering societies and industry associations are active in preparing and issuing standards. Some branches of the government standardize technical requirements to facilitate procurement. Until recently, the coordination of electrical and electronic standards for the armed services in the Department of Defense was effected by the ASESA (Armed Services Electro Standards Agency). Now this responsibility is handled by the Engineering and Standardization Directorate of the DESC (Defense Electronic Supply Center).
