Analog Devices has released a pair of highly integrated up- and down-converters operating from 24 to 44 GHz — covering all 5G millimeter wave bands. With flat 1 GHz instantaneous bandwidth, the converters support all broadband services and ultra-wide bandwidth transceiver applications.

The ADMV1013 up-converter and ADMV1014 down-converter each integrate I/Q mixers with an on-chip programmable quadrature phase shifter, configurable for direct conversion to or from baseband from DC to 6 GHz or an IF between 800 MHz and 6 GHz. The up-converter contains a transmit power amplifier driver, while the down-converter includes a receive LNA. Voltage variable attenuators, LO buffers with a x4 frequency multiplier and programmable tracking filters are also integrated on-chip. Both converters are matched to 50 Ω.

Most programmability functions are controlled via an SPI serial interface, including the capability for each converter to correct any quadrature phase imbalance, yielding an unmatched level of performance. This capability improves the sideband levels — usually difficult to suppress — by 10 dB or more from the typical −32 dBc.

The ADMV1013 up-converter is assembled in a 40-pin, 6 mm x 6 mm LGA package, and the ADMV1014 down-converter is in a 32-pin, 5 mm x 5 mm LGA.

The highly integrated ADMV1013 microwave up-converter and the ADMV1014 microwave down-converter are well-suited for millimeter wave radio platforms operating at the 28 and 39 GHz 5G bands. The combined 1 GHz bandwidth with the up-converter’s OIP3 of more than 20 dBm supports 1024-QAM modulation, used to achieve multi-Gbps data rates. The converters will also benefit other applications such as broadband satellite communication links, aircraft radios, RF test equipment and radar systems.

This combination of features provides unprecedented flexibility and ease of use, minimizing the number of external components and aiding the design of small form factor systems such as small cells.
