The Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization has signed a contract with Terma for the delivery of radar systems for the Danish Navy’s three new frigates of the IVER HUITFELDT class, which are expected to enter operational service in 2013. The radar is intended for surveillance and rescue assignments and helicopter guidance. The first system will be installed in May this year, and the two additional systems in December 2011 and February 2012.
The company’s SCANTER 6000 naval surveillance radar is particularly suited to detect small targets such as helicopters under demanding weather conditions at a distance of up to 15 nautical miles and guide the helicopter to a safe landing on board the vessel. The radar is specifically developed for surveillance assignments at sea, and consequently it is well-suited for search and rescue assignments and to combat asymmetric threats (terror and pirate attacks).
With the three new frigates, the Danish Navy obtains a considerable capacity for solving both national and international assignments. Terma has delivered radar systems for a number of the Danish Navy vessels. The SCANTER 6000 naval surveillance radar is already installed on the US Navy’s Stiletto vessel and will be installed as part of the Hermes French Offshore Patrol Vessel program later this year.
