Pat Hindle is responsible for editorial content, article review and special industry reporting for Microwave Journal magazine and its web site in addition to social media and special digital projects. Prior to joining the Journal, Mr. Hindle held various technical and marketing positions throughout New England, including Marketing Communications Manager at M/A-COM (Tyco Electronics), Product/QA Manager at Alpha Industries (Skyworks), Program Manager at Raytheon and Project Manager/Quality Engineer at MIT. Mr. Hindle graduated from Northeastern University - Graduate School of Business Administration and holds a BS degree from Cornell University in Materials Science Engineering.

MILCOM 2013 Show Wrap Up

Balancing commercial and defense technologies was the theme of Military Communications (MILCOM) Conference 2013 in San Diego, CA Nov 18-20.  Last year MILCOM was blown away by hurricane Sandy and cancelled.  This year it took a hit as the “Classified Sessions” were cancelled due to budget cuts that did not allow the military to travel to the conference.  The show moves back to the east coast to Baltimore next year, so we expect everything will be back to normal and the conference/exhibition will draw a strong attendance again.

MEMS Oscillators - Is it Time?

For almost 100 years, quartz based oscillators have dominated the precision timing market due to their high stability over temperature, low noise, low current and relatively low cost. While MEMS devices have been around for a while, the traditional electrostatic type of device has several issues that prevent it from being successful in high precision timing. Sand9 has developed a piezoelectric MEMS device that overcomes most of these issues and now is poised to compete with the traditional precision quartz devices.

Shanghai Highlights

IME/China and EMC/China
IME/China 2013 (China International Conference & Exhibition on Microwave and Antennas) was held October 23-25 in Shanghai at the Everbright Convention & Exhibition Center. IME/China is co-located with EMC/China so the two events complement each other in the same facility and make up one of the largest microwave trade shows in China. Both events have an exhibition and conference consisting of company sessions about their technology and products. Here is a summary of the event.

EuMW 2013 Features Automotive Technology

With the motto, Meet Experts, Make Friends, the 16th European Microwave Week took place in the Nürnberg Convention Centre, NCC Ost Oct 6-11. The number of delegates, visitors and exhibitors exceeded last year’s numbers with 280 companies exhibiting on the show floor. The conferences included the European Microwave Conference (EuMC), European Microwave Integrated Circuits Conference (EuMIC) and the European Radar Conference (EuRAD) so there was plenty of technical content. Browsing the papers being presented, the popular topics seemed to be related to Terahertz applications, RFID, RF MEMS, GaN amplifiers and wwWave applications.

Automotive Radar Hits Mass Market

When a car commercial shows a picture of Heinrich Hertz, you know that microwaves have hit the mainstream.  The new Mazda commercial starts by showing a picture of Hertz and proceeds to demonstrate their iActivsense safety system that uses radar and other sensors to prevent collisions.  The scene is done to The Who song Teenage Wasteland.  Hertz, radar and The Who - now that is a commercial!

Unbelievable UAVs!

I have been closely following the UAV market and related news for the last 6 months.  Most of the focus was on collecting market information and determining future directions that would be related to the RF/microwave market for the August cover feature article “UAVs Unleashed.”I was then able to attend the AUVSI Unmanned Systems show in August and was able to see some of the new platforms in person (see blog posting summarizing the AUVSI). And now it seems like UAVs are almost in the news every week with some new use case. From monitoring the health of crops to aiding in search and rescue to observing wildlife behaviors.  Being TGIF, I came across a couple of fun UAV applications with videos that caught my attention so have fun with these:

JLENS Completes Field Testing

The US Army reported yesterday that they completed Early User Testing (EUT) of the Raytheon’s JLENS (Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System), an integrated surveillance and fire-control radar on two tethered, 74-meter aerostats (or blimps). During the six-week-long EUT, soldiers tested JLENS' ability to operate in a number of complex scenarios that replicated an operational environment in addition to JLENS' endurance by operating the system continually for 20 days.
