Tyco Electronics has sold off the last remaining piece of the original M/A-COM components and sub-systems group this week and only retains the land mobile radio group. Autoliv of Sweden has purchased the automotive sensor group for $42 million and a few months ago Cobham announced that they will purchase the military and commercial RF/microwave groups. Once the Cobham purchase is complete, they plan to sell off the commercial group. Well, it took no time at all for someone to crack open the new iPhone 3G and see what chips are inside. iFixit.com got one in the first major time zone for it to go on sale (New Zealand) and dissected it immediately ( http://live.ifixit.com/images/XiuvbfUecK3GsDUm-large.jpg ). Infineon with 4 chips and Triquint with 3 chips were the clear winners here. I was hoping that the attendance and participation would come back strong after a below average year in 2007 in Hawaii. This year’s show in Atlanta did bounce back with about 9200 total attendees and about 2500 technical session attendees although this was well below the record numbers set a several years ago. I visited with many companies about their new products and here is a quick sampling from the exhibition floor. Freescale introduced a new 50 V LDMOS product for higher frequency applications (L-band) with 330 W pulsed operation. Triquint was excited about their acquisition of WJ Communications that gives them a broader product portfolio. Anritsu showed off their low cost Microwave Spectrum Analyzer with typical phase noise of -110 dBc/Hz at 1 KHz offset from the 1 GHz carrier.
