CML Micro announced that its U.S. subsidiary, Microwave Technology Inc. (MwT), has completed its relocation to upgraded facilities in Fremont, Calif. This milestone marks a major enhancement in CML Micro’s capabilities to support microwave and mmWave product development spanning L-Band to V-Band ranges where high-performance communications is driving the need for faster data rates and wider bandwidths.

Since joining the CML Group, MwT has secured the backing needed to invest in a state-of-the-art manufacturing site in the heart of Silicon Valley. Designed specifically to optimise production workflows and future-proof its compound semiconductor product lines, the new facility strengthens MwT’s ability to serve a growing client base with faster prototyping, greater customisation and responsive local technical support. The premises will also play a key role in supporting the continued expansion of CML Micro’s flagship SµRF product portfolio across North America.

The purpose-built facility is equipped with industry-leading infrastructure, engineered for the high-frequency, high-reliability production of hybrid amplifiers, modules and other discrete RF and microwave semiconductor components used in time-critical commercial, defence, aerospace, medical and industrial applications. With investment and strategic direction provided by the Group, MwT has significantly increased throughput, improved test consistency and expanded its capabilities in packaging and hybrid assembly, all essential for supporting mission-critical communications.

Key highlights of the new facility include:

  • Automated test handlers for production testing of QFN-packaged MMICs
  • Test equipment supporting frequencies up to 53 GHz
  • Ball and wedge bonding for chip-and-wire assembly and hybrid amplifier builds
  • A fully ESD-compliant environment for handling sensitive microwave components.

Mark McCabe, managing director, CML Micro said, “This move represents far more than a change of address for MwT, it is a strategic upgrade to our Group’s manufacturing capability. With the new Fremont facility, we’re in a stronger position to accelerate time-to-market, scale production and meet the demanding requirements of EHB applications worldwide."

Rob Currier, vice president of operations, Microwave Technology Inc (MwT) said, “Although MwT transitioned away from in-house wafer fabrication in back in 2019, we continue to deliver high-quality products through strong partnerships with our global foundry network. Becoming part of the CML Group in 2023 has only reinforced our long-term commitment to manufacturing compound semiconductor technologies."

With the new MwT facility in California and continual investment in its U.K. sites, the CML Group is strongly positioned to deliver innovative RF and microwave solutions to global markets. Its portfolio, which includes GaAs and GaN-on-SiC MMICs, GaN hybrid amplifiers and other discrete GaAs FETs, is available through a worldwide network of trusted distribution partners.
