Hittite Microwave Corp., a supplier of complete MMIC based solutions for communication and military markets, announces the expansion of its clocks and timing product portfolio to include a clock divider and delay management IC. The HMC988LP3E provides user selectable divider and phase adjust functions and offers best in class phase noise performance as well as rise and fall times. This high performance IC is ideal for data converter (ADC/DAC) sample clock phase alignment and backplane clock skew management functions for use in cellular infrastructure, networking, broadband and fiber optic communications as well as test and measurement equipment.

The HMC988LP3E can accept clock signals as high as 4 GHz which can then be divided by 1/2/4/8/16 and /32. It is a versatile device with two modes of phase adjustment: coarse and fine delay. Coarse adjustment allows for delay settings in increments of one half period of the input signal in any number of total increments that is desired. The fine delay adjustment, which works up to 1 GHz output frequencies, offers output phase control with 20 ps resolution in 60 steps. Additional timing functions include clock synchronization, clock invert and clock slip options, which provide a wide variety of phase control for data converter sample clocks. The HMC988LP3E features a standard differential LVPECL output and a flexible input which can be optimized for LVPECL, LVDS, CML or CMOS signals.

The excellent phase noise floor of -170dBc/Hz, 80 ps rise and fall times, and 20 ps phase adjustment resolution makes the HMC988LP3E ideally suited to driving ADCs, DAC’s and sample and hold amplifiers, minimizing the affects of aperture jitter. Fine timing adjustment is also advantageous in test and measurement, as well as clock recovery applications.  The device also features an optional on-chip power supply regulator with 85dB PSRR, which improves performance in noisier power supply conditions and helps reduce power supply filtering requirements.

Up to eight addressable HMC988LP3E devices can be used together on a SPI bus, and each device operates from a +3.3 V supply, or a +5 V supply if the optional on-chip regulator is utilized. The lowest power supply current configuration of the HMC988LP3E draws only 68 mA of supply current under typical conditions. It is housed in a compact 3 x 3 mm SMT QFN package. Samples and evaluation PC boards for all SMT packaged products are available from stock and can be ordered via the company's e-commerce site or via direct purchase order. Released data sheets are available on-line at www.hittite.com.
