Online Panel Series
Title: Online Panel: Metamaterials
Date: May 8, 2025
Time: 8am PT / 11am ET
Sponsored by: Kymeta and Echodyne
Abstract:
Metamaterials are growing in use to design and control RF and microwave signals in ways that could never be done with traditional methods. From new antenna and feed structures to new beam steering antenna systems, these products are being deployed into systems today. This panel of experts will discuss how metamaterials are enabling new products and reducing SWAP plus discuss the future directions for these new material systems.
Moderator: Pat Hindle, Media Director, Microwave Journal®
Panelist: Ryan Stevenson, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Chief Scientist, Kymeta
Panelist: Tom Driscoll, Ph.D., Founder and CTO, Echodyne
Panel Participant Bios:
Moderator – Microwave Journal®
Pat Hindle, Media Director
Pat Hindle is media director for Microwave Journal® and has been with the magazine for 12 years. He parlayed his process engineering background into a management role in marketing communications for several leading microwave semiconductor manufacturers including MACOM, Raytheon and Skyworks (Alpha Industries), in addition to working at MIT Nanostructures Laboratory manufacturing X-ray diffraction gratings for space research telescopes like Chandra. He has a B.S. in Materials Science Engineering from Cornell University and MBA from Northeastern University. In his current role as MWJ editorial director, he is responsible for setting MWJ’s editorial direction and developing marketing opportunities for industry clients. He has been the conference manager for EDI CON China and helped launch Signal Integrity™ Journal plus co-hosts the Frequency Matters videos and podcasts.
Kymeta
Ryan Stevenson, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Chief Scientist
As a founding member of the Kymeta organization, Dr. Ryan Stevenson has worked on the development of Kymeta technology since 2011. With his work at Intellectual Ventures, he helped spin out and create Kymeta. He brought an extensive background in RF/microwave engineering, photonics, and semiconductor manufacturing to his role at Kymeta. Ryan leads R&D and Intellectual Property for Kymeta.
Prior to joining Kymeta, Ryan held leadership roles in research science and system analytics in the government, public sector and aerospace markets. It was in these markets that Ryan honed his skills in managing cross functional initiatives that brought together engineering, hardware, software and mechanical disciplines to deliver reliable, innovative systems architectures. His early career successes in integrated photonics, antennas, and communications system modeling set the stage for today’s efforts at Kymeta.
Ryan holds a B.S. in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California.
Echodyne
Tom Driscoll, Ph.D., Founder and CTO
Tom Driscoll is a technologist, inventor, and entrepreneur with a drive to advance the art of the possible. Currently, Dr. Driscoll serves as Founder and CTO of Echodyne, the Seattle startup bringing breakthrough radar capability to meet commercial and defense needs across autonomy, security, and intelligence markets. Prior to Echodyne, Tom was Managing Director of the Metamaterials Commercialization Center, the technology incubator which launched the words first metamaterials-enabled ventures. Dr. Driscoll is a named inventor on over 100 patents, has co-founded five startups, and served on the board of directors of four. Tom holds a PhD in physics from UCSD, a B.S. in Physics from Harvey Mudd.
