Antenna Matching Using the Smith chart

February 21, 2025

A Smith chart can be used to design an impedance-matching network for a patch antenna with an inset feed.

By adjusting the inset depth, the antenna's input impedance can be brought closer to the desired 50-ohm match. The Smith chart helps visualize how the impedance moves as the feed position changes.

If additional matching is needed, a simple microstrip line or lumped element matching network can be added.
