Nokia will conduct trials of 5G technology with DOCOMO in the Tokyo metropolitan area throughout 2017, focusing on busy tourist, shopping and business locations, as well as at key public events hosted by the operator. Nokia Launches 4.9G Technology and AirScale Active Antennas

Nokia will introduce its 4.9G technologies by the end of 2017, allowing operators to dramatically enhance their network performance and manage the significantly higher infrastructure demands on the path to 5G. A 4.9G massive MIMO Adaptive Antenna will also increase cell capacity by up to five times, while a new 4.5G Pro AirScale Micro Remote Radio Head (RRH) will allow operators to take advantage of unlicensed spectrum to enable Gigabit speeds.

Nokia is to make the first ever demonstration of a 5G network running on commercial platforms as part of its showcase at 5G World that will underline the momentum of bringing 5G to commercial reality. Following the successful launch in February of the industry-first 5G-ready AirScale Radio Access technology Nokia will demonstrate AirScale working together with its Cloud Packet Core, running on a Nokia AirFrame data center platform, the foundation of a commercial 5G architecture.
