As a result, Junkosha offers some of the industry’s best phase and amplitude stability across its MWX7 Series of RF cables, see Figure 1.  With a maximum operating frequency of 67 GHz, the MWX7 Series of cables incorporates the lowest phase and amplitude deviation and best linearity over temperature for MIL-standard cables, including .120, .086, .070 and .047 in. (see Figure 2) to tackle the next generation of mmWave large-scale phased array radars. In these setups, even modest phase drift between channels can degrade beamforming or timing alignment.

In addition, extreme temperatures need to be managed to avoid lag in response times to threat detection, the implications of which are massive. Consider such radar installations and their criticality in detecting real-time defense threats. These radar systems will often be deployed in locations that experience extreme temperatures, both high and low. Therefore, the interconnects’ stability in the face of such temperature shifts needs to be rock solid so that there is no lag in response times. Overall, Junkosha’s ePTFE tape-wrapped MWX7 Series cable helps the radar system achieve instantaneous responses in critical situations, see Figure 3.

What Are the Future Trends in mmWave Radar and MIMO in a Defense Context?

Looking ahead, emerging mmWave radar and MIMO architectures are pushing operation to 32 GHz, with test requirements extending into the third harmonic near 90 GHz. In these legacy systems, traditional solder-down interfaces such as SMA connectors, typically limited to about 18 GHz, struggle to meet the demands of modern defense systems and high speed applications, introducing challenges in density, signal integrity and long-term reliability. As advanced military and aerospace platforms drive toward more input and output data points per system, overall channel density must increase without sacrificing performance. This, in turn, calls for higher frequency, lower loss, lower-profile cable and connector solutions that can maintain stable phase and amplitude performance in tightly packed, high-density layouts.
