Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Ltd. has been awarded a multi-million Euro contract to modernize an existing radio backbone for a North African customer. The company will be prime contractor, partnering with the French company, Twist, for the project that is scheduled for completion in 2009-2010.

The first phase involves the installation of a turnkey Synchronous Digital Hierarchy microwave network. Fujitsu will be responsible for building and then maintaining the core network using its FRX-2 long-haul microwave platform. The turnkey project will include all aspects of supplying, installing and maintaining the microwave backbone and its associated elements.

The contract involves building over 50 new sites, as well as upgrading existing ones throughout the region. Nearly 100 microwave links will be deployed and Add Drop Multiplexer and Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy multiplexers will be installed to handle service aggregation and centralized network management.

Stavros Petrides, chief strategy officer of Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe, commented, "This is a challenging and ambitious project, which will enable our customer to establish a state-of-the-art data backbone to meet its strategic objectives. The key to our selection was Fujitsu's proven capabilities in this sector, based on our market leading platform, the FRX-2, as well as our track record with operators such as Bouygues Telecom. The project will be led by our French organization, which has long-established experience and skills in radio transmission."
