Infineon Technologies, a supplier of communication ICs, has shipped its one billionth RF transceiver. For more than 15 years the company has supplied its communication ICs to all major companies in the mobile phone segment, including Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG. It shipped more than 230 million handset transceivers in 2006.

“We produce seven RF transceivers every second and approximately every fourth mobile phone worldwide has Infineon’s RF transceiver technology integrated,” said Stefan Wolff, vice president, Communication Solutions business group and general manager of the RF Engine business unit at Infineon. “Our strong footprint in the market is an indicator of our competitiveness and our best-in-class quality of products and innovative development skills of our engineers.”

The newest member in the family is the SMARTi® LTE, which is claimed to be the world’s first RF transceiver supporting LTE functionality in a single-chip RF silicon processed in CMOS, measuring 5 by 5 mm in a WFSGA-81 package. Silicon has been provided to selected customers, with volume shipments expected to be available by 2010.
