In a pair of related reports released by Strategy Analytics, the reality of 5G evolution is analyzed. The report, “5G Progress Review - Fragmentation Likely but Diversification Inevitable”, concludes significant work is needed to marry the appeal of a unified early 5G standard with the longer term need to support diverse market requirements.  

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, use of wireless handsets, particularly smartphones, continues to be on the rise, with product shipments showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. In its latest market data report, ABI Research, a leader in technology market intelligence, assesses the top 15 vendors globally dominating the wireless handset industry, closely examining key factors that continue to drive this continued market growth and predicting future industry patterns.

ABI Research reports that Chinese handset vendors will account for over 50 percent of mobile handsets in 2015. Chinese vendors already accounted for 38 percent of mobile handset shipments in 2013 and the ongoing shift in growth to low cost handsets, especially smartphones, will increase their market share.

Low cost smartphones, defined as smartphones with a wholesale ASP below $200, are increasingly appearing in OEM and operator portfolios in both emerging and developed markets. The low hanging fruit for low cost smartphones is to drive smartphone adoption in emerging markets where handset subsidization and disposable income are scarce.  Market intelligence firm ABI Research forecasts low cost smartphone shipments to grow from 238 million in 2013 to 758 million by 2018, driven by the low penetration of smartphones and large subscriber bases found in BRIC countries.

For the second calendar quarter in a row, smartphone shipments represented more than half (52%) of the world’s mobile phone shipments.  Led by electronics manufacturer Samsung, an estimated 408 million handsets and 214 million smartphones shipped during the second quarter of 2013, according to market intelligence firm ABI Research.

Smartphone shipments grew 38 percent year-over-year (YoY) while feature phone shipments declined 5.2 percent YoY. Shipments of all handsets grew 12 percent YoY in the first quarter thanks to the continued strength of the smartphone market, which achieved an all-time high of 49 percent shipment penetration.

In many parts of the world, smartphone shipments account for a larger percentage of mobile handset shipments than feature phones and low-cost handsets. Yet within the smartphone class of devices, segmentation is increasing to three price tiers (low, mid, and high). Shipments of sub-US$250 low-cost smartphones will grow from 259 million in 2013 to 788 million in 2018, according to recent Market Data from market intelligence firm ABI Research.
