Title: AUGUST 4 KEYNOTE: The Promises (and Pitfalls) of Open RAN Architecture
Date: August 4, 2021
Time: 7am PT / 10am ET
Sponsored by: Keysight Technologies
Presented by: Dr. Balaji Raghothaman, Chief Architect of Infrastructure Workflow Solutions
The disaggregation of the radio access network (RAN) into multiple subsystems with open interfaces between them is revolutionizing the cellular wireless architecture.
With the O-RAN Alliance, Telecom Infrastructure Project (TIP), and other bodies leading the way, the industry is witnessing a burst of activity in standardizing the behavior of Open RAN interfaces, facilitating the development and adoption of individual subsystems, and interoperability.
Numerous companies, including non-traditional players in the telecom space, have joined the movement and are participating in the standardization effort.
This talk will provide a bird’s-eye view of the Open RAN movement. What does the Open RAN architecture look like? What makes it so enticing to the industry as a whole? What are some of the pitfalls that lie ahead? We will cover these and other pertinent questions in this session and also discuss the future of Open RAN.
Dr. Balaji Raghothaman has more than 2 decades of accomplishments in wireless communications. In his role as Chief Architect for Infrastructure Workflow Solutions at Keysight, Balaji engages in improving and harmonizing Keysight’s product portfolio to meet customer needs. After completing his PhD in Signal Processing at the University of Texas at Dallas in 1999, he worked for 7 years at Nokia Research Center, performing R&D and managerial roles. The next 15 years were spent at Airvana, which then became part of CommScope. He also had a brief stint at Interdigital Solutions. Balaji was a prime innovator behind Airvana’s successful femtocell solutions and CommScope’s OneCell 4G cloud-RAN small cell solution, and led the system design for a fully virtualized 5G solution at sub-6 GHz and mmWave frequencies. He has been an active contributor to the O-RAN Alliance and Small Cell Forum and holds more than 65 patents (granted and pending).
