In Your Own Words with Andy Harrison

September 8, 2020

When Artech House authors write their books, we ask them what they want their readers to get out of the project. In this series, we show you what our authors, in their own words, wish to impart upon readers. Andy Harrison, author of Introduction to Radar Using Python and MATLAB, describes what his book is about:

This text covers a broad range of radar topics ranging from the radar range equation to synthetic aperture radar imaging.  The author first covers radar wave propagation including tropospheric refraction and ducting, and attenuation through various vegetation, rain, clouds and fog.   He then presents the derivation of the radar range equation along with variations for search and bistatic radar configurations.  Subsequent chapters deal with radar hardware including the analysis and design of antenna systems and radar receivers. The later chapters cover signal processing, target detection, pulse compression, constant false alarm rate methods and waveform analysis.  This is followed by a detailed treatment of methods for measurement and prediction of target radar cross section.  The author then covers tracking of targets with simple trajectories as well as maneuvering targets.  The final chapter derives a tomographic formulation for synthetic aperture radar imaging and gives examples in two- and three-dimensions.

The Python tool suite included with this text gives the reader a mechanism to analyze and predict radar performance for various scenarios and applications.  Also provided are MATLAB scripts corresponding to the Python tools.  The software includes a user-friendly GUI that provides many graphical outputs and visualizations of the concepts being covered.  The user has full access to both the Python and MATLAB source code to modify for their particular application.  Several examples using the tool suite are given at the end of each chapter.
