Texas Instruments (TI) introduced the SimpleLink™ CC2592 range extender that provides up to a 7x improvement in range when paired with TI’s 2.4 GHz low power RF solutions for ZigBee®, 802.15.4, 6LoWPAN and Bluetooth® low energy networks. The first launched pairing is the CC2592 with the SimpleLink ZigBee CC2538 wireless microcontroller (MCU) to speed time to market of ZigBee-enabled equipment.

The goal of delivering ‘home equivalent’ high-speed, consistent wireless internet connectivity for passengers and pilots on aircraft came a step closer today. In a joint announcement, Honeywell and Inmarsat confirmed that they have finalised the critical design review (CDR) of the GX Aviation aircraft avionics on schedule. It is anticipated that product certifications will be achieved later this year, followed by product introduction which is expected during the first half of 2015. 

Since embarking on its national smart metering project at the turn of the decade, more than 200 million new electricity meters have been deployed across China. However, according to ABI Research’s latest research, only around 50 million have so far been connected with bi-directional capabilities that can support true smart meter capabilities such as demand response. In short, this key smart meter project has not been that ‘smart’. But it is set to get smarter, and that means another wave of opportunity for technology providers.

Wi-Fi is a hot topic among car OEMs and a small number of luxury brands have already launched LTE-based Wi-Fi hotspot solutions during the past twelve months. Most major OEMs plan to follow suit with some, such as GM, claiming that it will start offering LTE-based Wi-Fi hotspot solutions in its vehicles in 2014.

Currently limited to the top-end luxury models, wireless connectivity will slowly permeate to lower tier brands and models.

M2M connectivity will be embedded in more than 2 billion devices across nine key industries by 2018, but it will be cellular that will bring the bulk of the value and the connectivity revenues.

Skyworks Solutions Inc., an innovator of high performance analog semiconductors enabling a broad range of end markets, announced that its industry leading wireless connectivity front-end modules (FEMs) are being leveraged by Broadcom Corp. for use in several of the company’s 5G WiFi solutions, enabling some of the fastest download speeds available in access points, routers, DSL/cable gateways, PCs, smartphones and tablets.
