Beam Steering in 5G mmWave Mobile Phone

February 15, 2023

Beam steering is a technique used in mmWave communications to direct a beam of radio waves towards a specific user or device. By focusing the beam in this way, it's possible to greatly increase the amount of data that can be transmitted and received, while also reducing interference from other sources. One of the key advantages of beam scanning is that it allows for much higher data rates than are possible with traditional omnidirectional antennas. In addition, it can also help to increase the range of mm-wave communications, which is particularly important for 5G mobile phones, as the higher frequency bands used for mmWave communications are subject to more signal loss over distance. The following example showcasing the total radiation pattern of 3 mm-wave antenna arrays placed in the mobile phone. Each antenna array has several scanning positions, which results in good coverage.
