We are putting the finishing touches on our Flagship IMS April issue--your comprehensive guide to the Microwave Week in Phoenix! The issue will be distributed in the delegate bags and will also be available at the Microwave Journal Booth #2331. The cover feature chronicles the rise of Motorola in Phoenix, including the history, culture and successful spin-offs that helped shape the high tech industry in the area. It is a very interesting story written by a Motorola/Freescale insider, Leonard Pelletier (aka RF Leonard). The issue will also cover the IMS conferences, exhibition and special sessions as well as technical features about many new developments in the industry.

I just returned from Mobile World Congress and the hot topics were 5G and IoT which mirrors what we have seen lately on the technology front. There is some controversy in discussing 5G these days as it is not defined yet, but we will cover the developments as the technology works itself out in the industry and standards organizations. IoT topics at MWC ranged from smart cities to the connected homes to vehicle-to-vehicle communications to wearable devices and were demonstrated in many of the booths at the exhibition.

A Blizzard of Activity

It has been a cold and snowy week in New England, but I have had the good fortune to be in warmer climates, missing the blizzard of 2015 and enjoying the mild weather of Phoenix, Ariz. and Santa Clara, Calif. While I was not fortunate enough to get tickets to the Super Bowl, I did have the opportunity to visit the good folks at Rogers Corp. and to do some reconnaissance in Phoenix as the annual IEEE MTT-S IMS event rapidly approaches. The city has added a lot of attractions to the area around the convention center since the last time the event was here and should prove to be an excellent venue for our annual Big Game. Hopefully it will be a little cooler this time around as well. I travelled from Phoenix to Santa Clara for DesignCon, which drew a good crowd and presented some impressive new products and technologies. More on that show later.

Looking back at 2014, a few key technologies were prevalent in the news. 5G research and prototyping took off as investment in this area has quickly expanded with support from industry and academia. This happened at the same time as the 4G rollout gathered steam, especially in the Chinese market where demand for components has been strong. CMOS continued to advance in the RF marketplace by showing off single chip RF fronts ends for 4G handsets and integrated mmWave AESA chips with up to 16 elements. Although CMOS has taken more market share in the RF marketplace along with GaN, GaAs still has a major presence in our industry due to its flexibility and already established manufacturing infrastructure. As the focus for more efficient amplifiers continued, envelope tracking came into the mainstream as a MIPI standard.

Delivering More for Less

Most of the technologies we cover in Microwave Journal have one thing in common. GaN, CMOS, envelope tracking, MIMO, etc. are all about getting more performance for less. Your customers want more data throughput for less cost and space and in less time. And the engineer who reads Microwave Journal has to deliver. If your company is not developing these attributes in your products, then you’re out of step with the general direction of our industry. And if your products are being enhanced in these areas and you’re not communicating this to our readers, well then you’re doing yourself a disservice.

Yes, I had Tapas. And Paella. Some Sangria as well. But there was much more than good food and drink to be had in Barcelona, Spain last week during the GSMA’s Mobile World Congress event. This show has become the global event for the mobile ecosystem, and it lived up to expectations once again. International editor Richard Mumford and I spent the week meeting with some of the leading semiconductor and test solution providers in our industry, hearing about the latest news and products to hit the market. With more than 1,800 companies from 32 countries and 85,000 visitors, this show was jammed packed with people and excitement. But with limited resources, it is always a struggle to convince the technical staff who is already overloaded with work to generate quality content. Here are some techniques to accomplish the task and get the most use of the content that is generated.

In order for a company to develop a profitable growth strategy, it should have a detailed understanding of its costs, competitive position and customer environment. However, due to resource constraints, department managers are usually focused on near term issues, and don’t have the time to focus on longer-term strategic issues. As such, any long-term analysis is substituted with conventional wisdom about the company and the markets they compete in. Unfortunately, more often than not, conventional wisdom is far off the mark from reality.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year! I hope that you’re all rested and ready for 2014. It’s going to be an exciting year for marketing, as the tools to connect and communicate continue to evolve and improve.

At Microwave Journal, we’re starting the year off by featuring “Augmented Reality” in our January issue. This cutting-edge technology brings print to life by embedding video and other rich media into ads and articles in the magazine. The reader simply downloads the free Layar app on their mobile device and scans the augmented content to experience this bridge from the print to the digital world. See Editor Pat Hindle’s article in this edition of The WaveGuide for more information.
