Technical Education Webinar Series
Title: The ABC’s of SmallSat Telemetry
Date: February 24, 2021
Time: 8am PT / 11am ET
Sponsored by: Rohde & Schwarz
Presented by: Rob Andzik, Senior Tech Fellow, AMERGINT Technologies Inc.
This one-hour webinar provides attendees an introduction to digital satellite communications with a focus on the telemetry and communication paths used by smallsats. Attendees will follow the flow of satellite telemetry between the space-vehicle and the operator. Each step in the path (encapsulation, commutation, space link, antenna site, ground network and control center) is described and areas of complexity discussed. This includes a quick overview of different types of modulation and Forward Error Correction (FEC) techniques. In addition, a look ahead at technology trends and new capabilities such as mesh networking in space and optical communications will be presented. Attendees should be familiar with the space domain and have a basic understanding of satellite operations. The presentation itself will last about 40 minutes with a 20-minute question/answer session at the end.
