MIMO radar has received much attention since its initial introduction nearly 20 years ago. A victim of the usual “hype curve” phenomenon, there was much early over-selling and ultimate disappointment when expectations were not met. Fortunately, through steady diligent research and development, useful practical applications of MIMO radar have been developed, demonstrated and validated. In this tutorial, we will provide an introduction to the theory of MIMO radar, then focus on specific applications that have been proven to work in the real-world. In particular, a novel airborne ZPY-4 MTI radar experiment will be discussed in which MIMO techniques were used to synthesize a virtual array that was able to conduct simultaneous adaptive clutter cancellation and monopulse with only two (2) phase centers. Lastly, exciting new areas of research in the area of optimum MIMO radar will be discussed.

Joseph R. Guerci has over 30 years of experience in advanced technology research and development in government, industrial, and academic settings including the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as Director of the Special Projects Office (SPO) where he led the inception, research, development, execution, and ultimately transition of next generation multidisciplinary defense technologies. In 2007, he received the IEEE Warren D. White Award for radar adaptive processing and is a Fellow of the IEEE for contributions to advanced radar theory and embodiment in real-world systems.
