Symmetricom Launches Carrier Class IEEE 1588 Grandmaster Server Blades

March 12, 2009

Symmetricom® Inc., a leader in precise time and frequency technologies that accelerate the deployment and enable the management of next generation networks, announced the company has expanded its IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) portfolio with its new carrier class IEEE 1588 Blades for the SSU 2000 and TimeHub®. The plug and play grandmaster server blades allow network equipment manufacturers and service providers to seamlessly migrate existing TDM-based backhaul networks to Ethernet backhaul while leveraging their existing synchronization infrastructure.

Symmetricom offers a comprehensive IEEE 1588 end-to-end solution, providing a high level of accuracy, reliability and control throughout the network. Symmetricom’s IEEE 1588 solutions consist of servers, including the TimeProvider® 5000 Grandmaster Clock and now the IEEE 1588 Blades, as well as PTP clients with multiple integration options, network management systems, measurement and monitoring tools, and global services and support.

“Carriers have long relied on Symmetricom’s Synchronization Supply Unit to meet all physical layer synchronization requirements with five-nines availability,” said Kevin Hsu, vice president of product marketing at Symmetricom. “Now, with the IEEE 1588 Blades, the SSU 2000 and TimeHub systems can be easily expanded to provide carrier class IEEE 1588 grandmaster support for demanding next generation networks. For the first time, customers have the ability to ‘plug and play’ a full feature IEEE 1588 server into their existing infrastructure enabling significant backhaul cost savings without sacrificing quality of service.”

Symmetricom’s IEEE 1588 Blades provide the performance, availability and security to deliver carrier class synchronization to meet the demanding requirements of packet-based networks. The blade form factor allows for ease of integration into existing synchronization infrastructures with superior scalability. The IEEE 1588 Blades are interoperable with multiple vendors’ PTP clients in addition to Symmetricom’s advanced IEEE 1588 client options which provide significant advantages in end-to-end network performance and management.
