Symmetricom Offers Comprehensive IEEE 1588 PTP Client Portfolio

November 13, 2008

Symmetricom Inc., a leader in precise time and frequency technologies that accelerate the deployment and enable the management of next generation networks, announced that the company now offers one of the most comprehensive IEEE 1588v2 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) client portfolios with three PTP client options – the TimeProvider™ 500 Translator, the PTP Client Module and the PTP Soft Client – enabling network equipment manufacturers and service providers to seamlessly migrate existing TDM-based backhaul networks to far more cost-effective Ethernet backhaul. The company announced its TimeProvider 500 PTP Translator in June 2008. The new PTP Client Module and new PTP Soft Client round out one of the most comprehensive IEEE 1588v2 PTP client portfolios in the industry.

“The groundbreaking release of the PTP IEEE 1588 v2 standard has the interest of network vendors and operators planning migration to IP/Ethernet backhaul,” said Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder at Infonetics Research. “With PTP 1588 v2, operators are now in a position to trust IP/Ethernet to be the single backhaul network to carry both 2G/3G voice and IP/Ethernet packet traffic instead of using the hybrid, 2-network approach. Symmetricom’s PTP client products have upgrade options that allow mobile operators and backhaul transport providers to deploy Ethernet backhaul to support next generation services now and in the future.”

With IEEE 1588v2 PTP, different end-devices in an Ethernet network can be synchronized, allowing operators to distribute precise timing and frequency throughout the network to ensure the stringent quality levels required for next generation applications and services. By providing a flexible, step-by-step migration path to implement IEEE 1588 PTP, Symmetricom’s PTP Client Portfolio will enable the accelerated deployment of next generation Ethernet backhaul networks worldwide.
