Analog and Digital Filter Design, Second Edition

Steve Winder
Newnes
450 pages, paperback; $59.99
ISBN: 0-7506-7547-0

The analog section of this book includes both passive and active filter designs, while the digital section covers infinite impulse response (IIR) and finite impulse response (FIR) filter design. Detailed circuit theory and mathematical derivations are not included because the book is intended to be an aid to practical filter design by engineers.

Chapter 1 gives examples of filter applications to explain why filter design is an important topic. Basic filter terminology and an overview of the design process are discussed. Chapter 2 describes the frequency response characteristics of filters, both ideal and practical. An important topic of this chapter is the use of normalized low pass filters with a 1 rad/s cutoff frequency. Chapter 3 provides the foundation for filter design theory. This leads from transfer function equations to pole and zero locations in the S-plane.

Chapters 4 to 7 cover how to design active or passive low pass, high pass, band pass and band stop filters to meet most desired specifications. Chapter 8 describes the diplexer and its application and performance. The use of phase-shift networks, with examples for flattening the group delay response of Butterworth filters, is the subject of Chapter 9. Chapter 10 is very practical in orientation, describing how different materials and component types can affect the performance of filters. Chapter 11 lists current software availability, including integrated circuit-specific software. Chapter 12 describes how transmission lines can be used to filter signals. Phase-locked loop filters are usually simple; however, a poor design can cause instability in the loop. Chapter 13 provides some examples that may help to remove some of this fear. Chapter 14 is an introduction to switched capacitor filters, while Chapter 15 outlines the process of digital filtering. Chapters 16 and 17 are dedicated to digital filtering in a little more depth - Chapter 16 covers FIR filters and Chapter 17, IIR filters.

Inder Bahl
Artech House Inc.
488 pages; $99, £69
ISBN: 1-58053-309-4

This book offers a comprehensive treatment of RF and microwave circuit elements, including inductors, capacitors, resistors, transformers, via holes, air bridges and crossovers. The topics discussed include materials, fabrication, analyses, design, modeling, and physical, electrical and thermal practical considerations.

The lumped elements are introduced in Chapter 1, describing their basic design, modeling, fabrication and applications. Chapter 2 deals with the basics of inductors, definitions, configurations, models, coupling and electrical representations. Printed inductors are covered in Chapter 3, while wire inductors are the subject of Chapter 4. A brief description of magnetic materials is also included.

Capacitors, including discrete, MIM and inter-digital are described in Chapters 5, 6 and 7, respectively. The basic definition of capacitor parameters, capacitor types, the analysis of parallel plate capacitors, voltage and current ratings and the electrical representation of capacitors are included in Chapter 5. Monolithic capacitors are treated in Chapter 6. The treatment of interdigital capacitors is included in Chapter 7, describing equivalent circuit models, design considerations and applications.

Chapters 8, 9 and 10 deal with lumped resistors, via holes and airbridge/dielectric crossovers, respectively. The basic definitions of resistor parameters, types, power handling and circuit models are included in Chapter 8. Chapter 9 deals with via hole connection and grounding. Types of airbridges and crossovers, analysis, circuit models and design consideration are discussed in Chapter 10. The application of lumped elements, including transformers, baluns and other passive circuits are treated in Chapters 11 and 12. Chapter 13 deals with fabrication technologies for lumped elements, including materials, salient features of fabrication and examples.
