RFS Delivers Complete Connected City Architecture with the Launch of Urban Based Infrastructure

UBI will enable connected cities by providing end to end coverage to support key applications

February 9, 2022

Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), a global designer and manufacturer of total-package solutions for wireless and broadcast infrastructure, announced the launch of a comprehensive portfolio of connected city solutions to deliver total wireless coverage in dense urban environments.

The Urban Based Infrastructure (UBI) architecture brings together a full range of connectivity solutions and services to give MNOs, neutral hosts and enterprise customers the reach and coverage necessary to deliver a range of connected city applications. RFS offers a complete service delivery that takes care of all aspects of the connectivity to underpin connected city deployments, from poles to the cables, antennas and filters needed to minimize interference and optimize real-world performance. In particular, this enables municipalities to work with RFS as a single infrastructure partner to deliver the comprehensive coverage needed for an effective and efficient connected city.

Alongside existing RFS solutions including the industry leading RADIAFLEX cable, which delivers coverage in challenging environments including over 40 percent of metros worldwide, RFS has launched new smart poles to enhance street level coverage in cities. The smart pole is a modular system which supports a range of connectivity standards from public safety, to 4G, 5G, Wi-Fi, mmWave and backhaul via microwave or fiber. This allows today’s connectivity needs to be served while leaving open the possibility of future modular upgrades to protect investments and offer a robust, future proofed ecosystem.

The UBI solutions include smart poles in a wide range of configurations with the features and services to address our customers’ requirements at street level.

  • High-capacity poles for eight to 12 radios. Smaller configurations available
  • Small cell and 4G antennas for the coverage area and frequencies per location
  • 5G radio and antennas
  • mmWave radios
  • Wi-Fi
  • Security cameras and call buttons
  • Environmental sensors for pollution and hazardous situations
  • EV charging stations
  • Management and monitoring software
  • Installation, maintenance and commissioning services.

Tom Kuklo, global product manager, Connected Cities at RFS commented, “We’re excited to be able to offer such a competitive and comprehensive portfolio of connected city solutions that anticipates and understands the pain points of connected city deployments and addresses them head on. We have over 120 years of connectivity expertise at RFS and have seen multiple stages in the evolution of wireless technology. UBI condenses that expertise into a futureproofed and customer-centric solution for connected cities.”

Monika Maurer, CEO at RFS added, “At RFS we pride ourselves on being able to develop solutions that enable our customers to take advantage of the latest industry trends. With the connected city market expected to reach $1.03 trillion by 2028 we are delighted to have technology ready to deploy that will help our customers capitalize on the opportunity.”
