Mitsubishi Electric to Expand Product Range of Ku-Band GaN HEMTs

February 22, 2021

Mitsubishi Electric is adding two 30 W, Ku-Band GaN HEMTs to its portfolio for SATCOM earth stations, which will be available to order on March 15. The devices cover the 13.75 to 14.5 GHz satellite uplink band.

Each product was designed to handle a different requirement: multi-carrier communications, such as voice, video and data on carriers at different frequencies; and single-carrier communication, to support increased data capacity and smaller earth stations. The multi-carrier device has low intermodulation distrotion (IMD3) with wide offset frequencies — to 400 MHz — for large-capacity SATCOM.

Ku-band satellite systems are increasingly being deployed for emergency communication during natural disasters and for satellite news gathering (SNG) by TV broadcasters in remote areas, where cable networks do not exist. In addition to the growth in conventional, single-carrier communication, multi-carrier communication is growing for high volume communication, supporting the downsizing of mobile stations for SNG.

Mitsubishi Electric has introduced five GaN HEMTs for multi-carrier and single-carrier SATCOM earth stations. These latest 30 W devices enable more amplifier designs, adding new power levels and the use of GaN drivers. They also support downsizing earth stations and larger capacity satellite communications.
