Extended Frequency Range Increases N Type Connector Performance

Amphenol RF has expanded its type N connector series with panel and semi-rigid cable mount configurations operating to 18 GHz, significantly increasing the frequency range from the standard type N, which is specified to 11 GHz.

The medium-sized connectors are interchangeable with type N connectors made to the MIL-C-39012 specification, with the familiar threaded coupling mechanism.

Amphenol’s new series are rugged, single piece designs made with a special albaloy plating, so they are well suited for applications requiring low passive intermodulation. Albaloy is an alloy of three metals: copper, tin and zinc.

They also have low VSWR and insertion loss and high power handling, according to Amphenol.

Paul Neill of Bell Labs invented the type N connector in the 1940s and is the eponym for the name. The original version was designed for military systems operating to 1 GHz, according to Wikipedia.
