MaxLinear Demonstrates Full Duplex Cable Technology
At the recent IBC exhibition in Amsterdam, MaxLinear, Inc. demonstrated its proprietary echo cancellation technology for full duplex (FDX) DOCSIS. The combination of FDX and DOCSIS 3.1 will enable cable operators to offer multi-Gbps upstream speeds for broadband services.
In cable systems without FDX, the spectrum used for upstream data transmission reduces the downstream spectrum. FDX simultaneously shares the spectrum for upstream and downstream traffic, allowing cable operators to increase upstream data rates without sacrificing the downstream spectrum.
FDX with DOCSIS 3.1 can carry up to 10 Gbps data rates over existing hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) networks, offering symmetrical capability for upstream and downstream services in the future. Using the existing HFC network avoids the need to upgrade the "last mile" to fiber.
Will Torgerson, vice president and general manager of MaxLinear's broadband group, said, "We’ve implemented the best-in-class FDX technology using our leadership in RF, analog and mixed-signal integrated circuit development in order to provide cable service providers with a future-proof remote PHY device solution in a very low power and cost-effective design.”
