Qorvo Introduces Industry’s First High Power BAW Filter for Massive MIMO

June 6, 2017

Qorvo® introduced the smallest, high power bulk acoustic wave (BAW) filter, handling 5 W average RF input power with peaks to 40 W. The QPQ1300 uses Qorvo’s robust, solidly mounted resonator (SMR) BAW technology, which meets the high reliability thermal power dissipation requirements for massive MIMO infrastructure equipment. At 5 mm x 5 mm x 1 mm, the size of the filter represents a 90 percent size reduction over ceramic filters. The QPQ1300 is optimized for 2575 to 2635 MHz, a sub-band for Band 41.The new filter solves reliability, assembly, test and space constraint challenges involved in designing massive MIMO infrastructure for future 5G systems.

Samples of the QPQ1300 are available to qualified customers.

Telecom providers are implementing massive MIMO equipment to boost LTE networks and prepare for 5G performance in large traffic areas. This results in additional capacity and better signal quality and improves usage of the existing network spectrum.

The QPQ1300 expands Qorvo’s line of advanced BAW filters for base stations, which solves difficult interference and coexistence challenges worldwide. They also enable operators and manufacturers to deliver higher speeds and greater bandwidth with more efficient use of existing spectrum.

James Klein, president, Qorvo's Infrastructure and defense products segment, said, “The size and power handling capabilities of the QPQ1300 differentiate it from every other filter on the market today. Smaller filters enable telecom equipment manufacturers to design printed circuit boards for space-constrained applications such as massive MIMO in order to improve network capacity using existing LTE network infrastructure.”

Qorvo's wireless infrastructure products will be featured at the 2017 International Microwave Symposium (IMS2017) in Honolulu, June 4-9, in Booth #1510.
