Raytheon to Develop 3DELRR, New Expeditionary Radar for USAF

Raytheon Co. has been awarded a $52.7 million fixed-price-incentive (firm target) contract for the engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) of the Three-Dimensional Expeditionary Long-Range Radar (3DELRR). Raytheon will develop three 3DELRRs representative of production units, with completion planned by November 30, 2020. The development work will be performed at Raytheon's facility in Andover, Massachusetts.

The 3DELRR will replace the AN/TPS-75, the Air Force's principal ground-based radar for surveillance, detection and tracking of aerial targets. Operating at S-Band (2.9 to 3.2 GHz), the AN/TPS-75 radar covers more than 200 nautical miles in any direction and can detect aircraft flying up to 95,000 feet; however, it uses vacuum tube technology.

Raytheon's design operates at C-Band and uses GaN. C-Band is a relatively uncongested portion of the spectrum, which will provide the Air Force with additional operational flexibility.

Raytheon won the EMD contract through a competitive acquisition.

$5.5 million in fiscal 2017 research, development, test and evaluation funds were "obligated" when the contract was awarded. The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Hanscom Air Force Base is the "contracting activity" (FA8730-17-C-0018).
