EDI CON USA 2017

MWJ Editors Lead Expert Panels on 5G at EDI CON CHINA

Panelists set to debate the latest in 5G technologies and RF PA design

April 5, 2017

EDI CON CHINA 2017 will take place later this month (April 25-27) at the Shanghai Convention Center of International Sourcing (Shanghai, China) and includes a packed three-day technical program as well as three days of exhibits for attendees. This is the fifth year for EDI CON CHINA, and intrepid Microwave Journal editors, Patrick Hindle and Gary Lerude, will be leading panels addressing the evolution of wireless infrastructure networks from LTE to 5G. (Lerude will also be leading a panel on the range of market applications for GaN,during a workshop sponsored by  Richardson RFPD on Wednesday afternoon at 14:50.)

Hindle kicks off his panel on Tuesday, April 25th at 16:50-17:30, Room 305B. The topic:  Which technology is better for the first 5G Systems: Massive MIMO sub-6 GHz or mmWaves? All conference delegates are welcome to attend (you can register here). This panel will debate whether the first 5G systems should be implemented with mmWave networks where bandwidth is plentiful or should they be implemented using sub-GHz massive MIMO systems because there are too many challenges.

“Sub-6 GHz networks are well understood, work with fast moving objects, propagate farther than mmWaves, are not blocked by objects and are lower in cost,” says Hindle, “However, capacity is constrained, spectrum crowded and power consumption is high for massive MIMO. On the other hand, millimeter wave networks have much greater capacity with plenty of spectrum available, are directional so energy can be more efficiently aimed, can reflect off of objects for multiple paths and are very compact, but they suffer from propagation loss, are blocked by objects, have challenges communicating with fast moving objects and do not penetrate.”

The panel will feature the following experts and be moderated by Patrick Hindle, Microwave Journal’s editor:

  • Dr. Chih-Lin I, Chief Scientist, Wireless Technologies, China Mobile
  • Dr. Thomas Cameron, CTO Communications Business Unit, Analog Devices
  • Peter Rabbeni, Sr. Director of RF BU Bus. Dev. & Product Mkt., GLOBALFOUNDRIES
  • Randy Becker, Application Engineer, Keysight
  • Ribo Tang, Business Development Manager, Rohde & Schwarz (China)
  • Jason White, Director of Product Marketing for RF and Wireless Test, National Instruments

On Wednesday April 26th, EDI CON China explores trends in mobile infrastructure with Lerude’s panel at 13:45 in Room 307A. Mobile networks around the world are rapidly improving, as LTE adopts the features and capabilities of LTE-Advanced and looks to LTE-Advanced Pro and 5G. This panel session will specifically explore the implications of these changes on the RF power amplifier section of the base station.

“As we look closely at the RF PA, we will be discussing performance requirements with small cells and massive MIMO, the impact of the new radio (NR) air interface, amplifier technology tradeoffs as higher frequency spectrum is implemented, inroads by GaN, and which ‘flavor’ of GaN is winning designs—GaN on Si or GaN on SiC,” says Lerude.

Moderated by Microwave Journal technical editor Gary Lerude, the panel will comprise representatives from base station power amplifier semiconductor suppliers:

  • Nick Pulsford, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Ampleon
  • Pan Yu, Director of the RF Power Amplifier Department, Dynax Semiconductor
  • Michael Meng, MACOM, Director of RF Solution Sales, China, MACOM
  • Dong Wu, Senior Director of RF Power for Asia Pacific, NXP Semiconductors
  • Roger Hall, General Manager of High Performance Solutions, Infrastructure and Defense Products, Qorvo

Each panel will include opportunities for questions and answers from the audience, and is open to all registered conference delegates to EDI CON CHINA 2017. Microwave Journal online readers can receive a free conference pass to EDI CON CHINA 2017 by entering this code: VIP17MWJ during check out.
