36 Gbps Max Reported Data Rate

As the industry is gearing up for next week’s Mobile World Congress (MWC), Viavi Solutions released a summary of global pre-5G trials:

25 operators have announced lab tests, and 12 report field testing. Four operators have announced plans for trials. All this activity with 5G standards not yet defined.

According to Viavi’s compilation, five operators have demonstrated data rates of 35 Gbps or more in the lab, with the UAE’s Etisalat claiming the highest speed of 36 Gbps. Qatar’s Ooredoo has demonstrated 35.46 Gbps; Australia’s Optus and Singapore’s M1 and Starhub have reached 35 Gbps. Vodafone UK reports 20 Gbps, AT&T 14 Gbps, T-Mobile 12 Gbps and Verizon 10 Gbps.

The most widely used spectrum for testing is 28 GHz, based on eight operators that have disclosed operating at this frequency. Seven operators are using 15 GHz.

Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, Samsung and ZTE are supporting these trials.
