Huawei and LG U+ Demonstrate 31 Gbps Data Rate, 0.5 ms Latency in 5G Test

December 1, 2016

Huawei and Korean telecom operator LG U+ announced the completion of joint tests to demonstrate three 5G commercial scenarios: enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable low latency communications (uRLLC) and massive machine-type communications (mMTC). These scenarios are consistent with planned 5G capabilities, which comprise 1) ultra-high data rates for services such as augmented and virtual reality, 2) low latency for applications like smart driving and 3) massive machine connections for the Internet of Things (IoT).

In the live 5G tests conducted by Huawei and LG U+, cell peak rates reached 31 Gbps and latency was less than 0.5 ms. Simultaneously using the short transit time interval (TTI) and f-OFDM reduced latency to 0.5 ms, and adopting sparse code multiple access (SCMA) enabled a significant increase in the number of cell connections, necessary for mMTC. The companies did not specify the operating frequency or bandwidth used for the tests.

LG U+ and Huawei plan further tests of LTE and 5G dual connectivity based on the CloudRAN architecture. The two companies have a 5G memorandum of understanding (MoU) and are preparing for pre-commercial 5G use by 2018.

Kang Jung Ho, Vice President of LG U+, said, "We hope to provide the availability of 5G services for Korean users by 2018."
