CableLabs partners with Rohde & Schwarz for Wi-Fi and IoT device compliance testing

September 11, 2015

CableLabs, a non-profit R&D consortium dedicated to the development of innovative technologies that significantly impact its cable operator members' businesses, is committed to increasing the quality and security of Wi-Fi enabled devices to meet the growing needs of cable operators around the world. For over-the-air (OTA) device testing and compliance, CableLabs has invested in the R&S TS8991 WPTC System that provides its members and device manufacturers with CTIA compliance and validation to ensure that WiFi enabled devices are network ready.

Carriers today are looking towards Wi-Fi as an effective and efficient means by which to expand their network coverage and offload their wireless traffic. At the same time, carrier WiFi deployments must deliver the same quality of experience that customers have come to expect with mobile and fixed-line networks. To deliver this type of experience will require tighter integration in device-to-device, and device-to-network interactions, an objective directly addressed through the CTIA CWG test plan.

Previously, device manufacturers were not required to certify products for Over-the-Air (OTA) compliance. However, as devices have become more sophisticated and networks more numerous and crowded, the need for OTA compliance is now a necessity to ensure the overall quality of experience as expected in delivering carrier grade WiFi services. The R&S TS8991 WPTC System is used to confirm WiFi and IoT compliance and improve user quality of experience.
