Why this webcast is important:
The demand for mobile communication continues to grow exponentially, leading to sophisticated wireless standards such as LTE-Advanced (4G) and 802.11ac (WLAN). These powerful communications systems make high demands on linearity, bandwidth, and noise performance that are changing the nature of transceiver IC design. Whereas previous design generations have relied on IP3, NF, and Gain based on 1-tone and 2-tone CW tests, it is now crucial to anticipate the true modulated system-level performance, such as EVM, ACPR, and BER, which can vary significantly, depending on the standard.

These specifications are difficult to budget, and require simulation using the actual standard-compliant modulated signals in order to fully capture third order nonlinearities, AM/AM and AM/PM distortions, spectral regrowth, and memory effects. Moreover, the increased bandwidth of Carrier Aggregation drives PAPR to extreme levels, and must be characterized over many operating states and spectrum bands. Optimizing the RFIC design against standard-compliant waveforms and measurements (such as EVM/ACLR in transmitters, or sensitivity/desensitization in receivers), identifies marginal designs earlier, as well as overdesigns that add costly, unnecessary die area or current consumption.

Presenters:

Andy Howard, Senior Application Engineer

Andy Howard joined HP in 1985 as a development engineer designing microwave circuits. He spent a year in Japan as a systems engineer before becoming an HP EEsof applications engineer in 1993. His applications work has included simulating noise in nonlinear circuits, high-yield design techniques (design of experiments), Circuit Envelope applications, and for the past fourteen years Agilent ADS, RFDE, and GoldenGate examples. He developed the ADS Amplifier DesignGuide, and also worked on the Mixer DesignGuide. He has extensively updated the ADS Load Pull DesignGuide. He designed a high-speed prescaler IC using Agilent's RFIC Dynamic Link, that was fabricated using IBM's SiGe process. He is the author of the RFIC Flow Workshop. He graduated from U.C. Berkeley, B.S. E.E., 1983, and M.S. E.E., 1985. He was a visiting researcher for one year at NEC's Central Research Labs in Japan while a graduate student, and is fluent in Japanese. He has published a more than 20 magazine articles, HP or Agilent seminar papers, and application notes.

Juergen Hartung, RFIC Product Marketing & Foundry Program Manager
Juergen is RFIC Product Marketing & Foundry Program Manager at Agilent EEsof and has been working as business development manager for RFIC at Agilent in Europe before. Prior to Agilent, he worked 10 years with Cadence Design Systems in RF/analog/Mixed Signal research, technical marketing, and director of engineering for wireless application design flow. He started his career as a RF design engineer at SICAN GmbH in Germany. Juergen holds a Masters and PhD in Electrical Engineering.
