Abstract:

Designing filters that explicitly match system requirements for custom response shapes is difficult with conventional filter design techniques using scaling and transform of low pass prototypes. This often does not produce the most economic filter in terms of component values and counts. A better approach is through the use of direct network synthesis from the desired transfer function of the custom filter, followed by schematic transforms to yield the optimal realizable filter. This webcast introduces a direct filter synthesis design flow called S/Filter which provides integrated techniques for extracting the best filter topology and customizing its schematic with exact and approximate network transforms for practical realization. It enables you to design better and more economic filters.

Target Audience:

This webcast is intended for engineers who wish to learn custom filter synthesis or expand their skills beyond conventional filter design techniques. Familiarity with RF terminology is assumed but no filter design experience is required. The webcast features practical techniques with examples.

Presenter Bio:

Randall Rhea graduated at the University of Illinois (69) and Arizona State (73), and worked at the Boeing Company, Goodyear Aerospace and Scientific-Atlanta. He founded Eagleware Corporation and Noble Publishing, which were acquired by Agilent Technologies in 2005 and by SciTech Publishing in 2006, respectively. He has authored numerous papers and four books, and has taught workshops to over a thousand engineers worldwide at symposium, companies and the Georgia Institute of Technology. Examples in this webcast are excerpted from his new book Synthesis of Filters: Using S/Filter to be published in 2014. He is retired and resides with his wife of 44 years in an antebellum plantation home near Thomasville, Georgia.
