Gary Lerude

Gary Lerude is the Technical Editor of Microwave Journal. Previously, he spent his career as a “midwife” aiding the growth of the compound semiconductor industry, from device to application, from defense to commercial. He spent 19 years at Texas Instruments, 11 years at MACOM and six years with TriQuint. Gary holds a bachelor’s in EE, a master’s in systems engineering and an engineers degree (ABD) in EE.

Companies and Products

Anadigics stock has recovered slightly after dropping 59 percent the day after their depressing earnings call. Friday's close was "only" down 46 percent from the closing price just prior to the call.

The Avago-Broadcom Hart-Scott-Rodino (HSR) waiting period expired without a second request, meaning the U.S. Government has no antitrust concerns with the deal.

Cree announced mixed Q4 and FY15 results. While Power and RF Products revenue grew 15 percent from FY14 to FY15, it has been largely flat all year.

Google has reorganized, creating a new parent named "Alphabet" to pursue bold initiatives. Sundar Pichai was named the CEO of Google.

Keysight completed their $600 million acquisition of Anite, which expands Keysight's wireless software portfolio.

Mercury Systems reported FY15 revenue of $235 million, which was up 13 percent from FY14. The book-to-bill was 1.14 with an ending backlog of $208 million.

MicroWave Technology released two GaAs preamplifiers for MRI coil applications in the 64, 123 to 138 and 298 MHz bands.

Pasternack introduced a family of electromechanical switches: 134 designs covering DC to 46 GHz, with 0.2 to 0.6 dB insertion loss. Also, the company received a 4-Star Supplier Excellence Award from Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems.

Peregrine Semi received QML certification for military and space programs from the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency.

Qualcomm is acquiring struggling chip supplier Ikanos for $47 million, which strengthens the Atheros division's position in home wireless networking.

Raytheon was awarded a $36 million contract to certify and test the AN/ARC-231 VHF/UHF multi-band tactical communications system.

Announcing quarterly results, Resonant reported their first product, a Band 3 duplexer, is being qualified and sampled while they negotiate a license agreement — presumably with Skyworks.

Skyworks is adding cell phone filter capacity with a 405,000 square foot facility in Osaka that will be operational by September.

Satellite Internet provider StarBand announced it will shut down September 30. SpaceX, another satellite Internet venture, may be able to capture Starband's spectrum.

Following T-Mobile's lead, Verizon is eliminating cell phone subsidies and two-year contracts; they will instead offer a two-year payment plan for the phone.

As China's economy slows, the central bank moved to devalue the renminbi to make exports more competitive. The Chinese government is also using other strategies to stimulate the economy.
