According to ABI Research, the pieces of the carrier Wi-Fi puzzle are falling into place as the standardization process speeds up with the recent updates on Hotspot 2.0 and commercial Next Generation Hotspot deployments counting more than 12 networks worldwide—implementing Cisco and Ruckus equipment. 

 ABI Research’s latest forecast for outdoor small cells includes new market research and revises its expectations for 2014 and the forecast period to deliver a 48 percent CAGR through 2019.  

 Global driverless vehicle shipments will increase from 1.1 million in 2024 to more than 42 million in 2035, with an installed driverless vehicle base reaching 176 million according to ABI Research.

 According to an updated market forecast from ABI Research, the installed base of active wireless connected devices will exceed 16 billion in 2014, about 20 percent more than in 2013. The number of devices will more than double from the current level, with 40.9 billion forecasted for 2020. 

 The growing appetite for on-the-go, real-time information and mobile entertainment services will see the total number of subscribers for 4G LTE and 4.5G LTE-Advanced grow to nearly 411 million and 22 million respectively by year-end 2014. ABI Research’s 4G network deployment tracker anticipates that 45 networks will have commercially launched LTE-Advanced by 4Q 2014.  

 LTE-Advanced network deployments are becoming a tangible reality in 2014. As of the end of 1Q 2014, ABI Research estimates there were ~60 LTE-advanced trials, commitments and commercial deployments worldwide, of which 22 commitments were from Western Europe, 16 from Asia-Pacific, and 5 from North America. In addition, Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is gaining market traction in 2014, providing voice services alongside LTE mobile broadband in a reliable and profitable way. 

 The highly promoted RF PA devices from Qualcomm are starting to hit production phones, according to ABI Research.  

 Health, commercial/enterprise, wearables, and iBeacons will help to revive the GPS tracking device market, with ABI Research forecasting the market to reach over $3.5 billion in 2019. 

 Global penetration of V2X modules in new vehicles will reach 62 percent by 2027. The total installed base of OEM and aftermarket DSRC V2X modules in vehicles will grow to 423 million by 2027.
