Scientists in Australia and Europe have taken an important step towards removing ‘hot’ electrons from the data chips that are a driving force in global telecommunications. Researchers from the University of Sydney Nano Institute and Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light say that chips using light and sound, rather than electricity, will be important for the development of future tech, such as high-speed internet as well as radar and sensor technology.

Thirty-one global technology companies launched the Open RAN Policy Coalition to promote policies that will advance the adoption of open and interoperable solutions in the radio access network. Ericsson and Nokia are notably absent.

CommAgility announced the general availability of its PHYRefChain-5G software which supports the development of 5G base station technology. Designed for 5G product developers working on SATCOM, wireless test, military communications and private network designs, this new software enables fast development and deployment of specialized 5G solutions for customized and unique applications.

NXP Semiconductors N.V. announced it has collaborated with Murata, a system-in-package integrator for 5G mobile platforms, to deliver the industry’s first RF front-end modules designed with the latest Wi-Fi 6 standards. Together, the companies are delivering a solution that can reduce design times, improve time-to-market and save board space in next generation Wi-Fi 6 implementations. 

The Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) announced that nine new companies and organizations have joined the industry association representing the global 4G and 5G mobile ecosystem.

Infineon Technologies AG announced the closing of the acquisition of Cypress Semiconductor Corporation. The San José-based company has become part of Infineon effective as of the closing.
