In Search of Microwave Journal China Authors

Later this month, Microwave Journal Publisher, Carl Sheffres and I will be travelling to Shanghai and Beijing where we will be meeting with many RF/microwave engineers and marketing professionals. The purpose of our trip will be to learn about the state of the industry in China from the perspective of local microwave component vendors and their customers. This exchange is an important step in identifying the authors and topics that will appear in future issues of Microwave Journal China. We will also be recruiting speakers, topics and sponsors/exhibitors for next year’s EDI CON event which will be held April 8-10, 2014 at the Beijing International Convention Center (BICC).

The Drones are Coming, The Drones are Coming!

Pardon my play on the famous American Revolution phrase in honor of the recent July 4th holiday. It does allow me to segue into the upcoming “Military Microwaves” supplement, which will be distributed with the August issue of Microwave Journal and features a cover story by Technical Editor Pat Hindle titled “UAV’s Unleashed.” This article takes a look at the current state of unmanned autonomous vehicles (often referred to as “drones”), the opportunities for the RF/microwave industry and some future directions. This annual supplement is always our most popular with advertisers and has the added advantage of bonus distribution at the MILCOM and EuMW events. The deadline to reserve ad space is July 10th.

2013 North America Long Haul

The disruptive factors
Historically, the long haul market has not created much excitement – the big iron radios were used most often in project based deals, placed at aggregation points towards the core of the network due to their high power and high capacity.  Although they were not used as much as short haul radios, their price points were much higher, starting at around $12,000 - $15,000.  As packet based protocols and higher levels of capacity became the de facto requirement for short haul microwave radios, long haul radios followed suit, increasing capacity and adding Ethernet services either through packet or hybrid platforms.

Beijing to Seattle

The Electronic Design Innovation Conference (EDI CON) debuted in Beijing, China on March 12-14th. You may have read some of the post-show news and reports that were sent out immediately following the event. By all accounts, it was a smashing success, exceeding even our most optimistic projections. The event drew nearly 2,500 attendees, more than 1,200 conference delegates and 22 media organizations. The Plenary session was completely full, many presentations were standing-room only and the exhibition was buzzing. Good stuff all-around.

Celebrating Engineering Achievement

As this month's WaveGuide makes its way over the internet and into your e-mail inbox, many of you are deeply immersed in creating marketing literature, data sheets and booth graphics for the upcoming season of trade shows. Whether your company’s engineering department orchestrates the release of new products to coincide with industry events or not, these gatherings represent the best opportunity to promote your latest solutions. While some traditionalists may wait until the event to make big announcements, it is advantageous to announce major releases before the trade show, enticing attendees with a pre-view of products and avoiding getting lost in the noise.

Our May issue is at the printer and will soon be mailed to subscribers and shipped to Seattle for major distribution at the show. Thanks to all of our advertisers for your continued support. The issue looks great.

2012 Market in Review: Microwave Radios

Over the past six years the microwave market has had its peaks and valleys, with 2012 ending on the lower end of that range. Microwave radio’s main application is mobile backhaul, especially for traditional macro cells.  If mobile operator spending weakens, so does the market.  In 2012, the issue wasn’t so much the amount that mobile operators were spending but more where operators chose to spend those dollars.  Macro-cell spending flattened out as operators focused on increasing data capacity with small cells.  In addition to the focus on small cells, the sluggishness of the market can be attributed to a couple of factors.
