Global capital expenditure weakened in 4Q2011 for many mobile operators as they trimmed their budgets for the remainder of 2011. LTE smartphones will top 65 million units in 2012, led by the anticipated LTE-enabled iPhone 5 and Samsung’s LTE smartphones. “Mobile wireless royalties for GSM, WCDMA, and LTE smartphones were just under $20 billion in 2011 but the increase to 65 million LTE smartphones will help push the 2012 royalty total higher,” states research director Philip Solis.
