Hitachi and Airvana Selected for KDDI's 3G CDMA Femtocell Trials

February 2, 2010

In line with what is expected to be a busy year for femtocell announcements, Japan's second biggest operator KDDI has announced its vendor selection for femtocell trials. The trials are expected to commence in March 2010. For Airvana, which is one of the few vendors offering both CDMA and UMTS femtocells in its portfolio, this is the second big CDMA femtocell win within the last eight months. In June 2009, Airvana was selected as the vendor for Sprint's 3G femtocell launch, which is in the cards for 2010. Samsung, Motorola, Alcatel Lucent and Airwalk are some of the other vendors vying for the CDMA femtocell market.

Hitachi is the network integration partner for Airvana that will also provide the core network gear for KDDI. KDDI has a CDMA 1xRTT and EVDO RevA network across Japan, both parts of which are being supported by the multimode Airvana's HubBub CDMA femtocell. Airvana is also supplying the network gateway which aggregates multiple femtocell connections using SIP.
